CHARITY - Used Books Collection (till Jan 29, 2011)

Dear friends

We have received the message below which may be of interest to you. It is from:
  • SAHABAT ANAK, an organization that provides education and encouragement to Jakarta's street kids and
  • TAMAN BACAAN PELANGI , which establishes small libraries for children in remote villages in Flores, NTT.
BLIC members may have some used books to donate. It is for a good cause.

Thank you and best regards -Randolph

DRIVE BOOKS, NOT CARS  is a completely volunteer-driven project designed to raise awareness for Sahabat Anak and Taman Bacaan Pelangi

A few friends and I started it last September. This is the second drive. We are not looking for cash, but instead we would love your support. I know you know tons of people out there. Just tell them about what we are doing. Spread the word.
We are collecting all the English-language novels and Indonesian-language children's books we can get our hands on. On Jan 29th 2012 after we collect all the books from the 60 drop boxes around town we selling them back by opening in Jakarta  the biggest secondhand bookstore outside Ex during Car Free Day.

We collected over 5,000 books last time around and raised more than $3,000 to fund scholarships here in Jakarta and open libraries in Flores. Every rupiah goes to the kids. W know of no other organization or initiative here in Jakarta that can say that. We don't have a budget. We pay our own way during meetings. Every cent goes to the kids.

SOCIAL - BIMESA helps people in Yogyakarta and the hospital of Bajawa on the Island of Flores (Indonesia)

Dear friends

In-line with the BLIC intitiative to keep you informed about noteworthy activities of Belgians here in Indonesia, I am pleased to send you herewith the copy of an e-mail received by a representative of a Belgian Association named BIMESA (www.bimesa.be).

VZW Bimesa is an abbreviation of Belgian Indonesian Medical Education Social Association and was founded in 2004. It is a Belgian non-profit organisation. Their activities cover on-site medical aid and social-educational help as well. They are mostly self supporting and voluntary work is one of the basic philosophies.
